Rest Is Not Something You Have to Earn

Summer often arrives with a sense of excitement and possibility. The days are longer, and the weather is warmer. While summer can bring anticipation and joy, it can also put pressure on people to make the most of every sunny day. For many people, the pressure to say yes to every invitation and make the most of summer can be exhausting.

This is especially true in our culture, which often celebrates productivity and achievement. As a result of these views, rest is frequently seen as something that is earned once our to-do lists are complete. However, our to-do lists rarely end, which can lead many people to delay rest indefinitely.


         The truth is that rest is not something that has to be earned. Rest is a basic human need. Rest is essential for a healthy body and mind. Taking time for good-quality rest helps reduce stress, improve focus, and support emotional well-being. This can lead to an increased ability to be present in your daily life.


         Rest can also look different for everyone. It might mean spending a quiet evening at home, taking time to see your closest friends, taking a walk, setting boundaries around work hours, or giving yourself permission to spend a few moments doing nothing at all.


Many people experience difficulties when they try to slow down. They may worry that they are wasting time, falling behind, or they may not even be sure how to truly relax. If this is something you resonate with, try approaching rest with curiosity rather than judgment. Ask yourself: What would it be like to view rest as a necessary part of caring for yourself rather than something you have to earn?


         This summer, consider giving yourself permission to experience rest as a regular act of self-care rather than another item on your checklist. You do not need to wait until everything is finished or perfect before taking a break. Your well-being matters today, not just after all the work is done.
