Art therapy exercises are used to facilitate expression in a safe and creative environment where there are no expectations to use your voice to communicate. It can relieve the pressure to find the correct words to describe an experience, complex emotions, themes, or abstraction by allowing the client to use their nonverbal psyche faculties for expression.
Art Therapy sessions are not solely about creating expressive art. It is an adjunctive tool that will be used along with traditional Psychotherapy. Therefore, Art Therapy renders itself as a creative form of Psychotherapy and the traditional psychotherapeutic approaches such as CBT, Gestalt, Person-centered, Psychodynamic are applied.
Meet Christine Atkinson, LCAT
Christine Atkinson is a licensed creative arts therapist and is board certified (LCAT, ATR-BC) with a MA degree in Creative Arts Therapy from Hofstra University. Christine focuses on a person-centered approach while creating self-awareness, increasing quality of life, and promoting growth. She has worked with a variety of individuals from all age ranges, from children to adults to seniors. Christine has previously worked in settings such as hospitals, domestic violence shelters, nursing homes, short-term rehabilitation centers, and in both group and individual settings. She has experience that includes working with clients to reduce stress and strive towards allowing individuals to redefine themselves. Christine creates a safe creative space to begin a journey of growth, renewal, and a path towards achieving authenticity.

Meet Malene Austin, CAT - LP
Malene received her Master of Professional Studies degree in Art Therapy and Creativity Development from Pratt Institute. Seeking to support individuals struggling with anxiety, loss/grief, co-dependency, depression, and interpersonal connections, Malene connects art making, meditation, and deep breathing to develop a deeper awareness of what is happening within one's mind and body. Life is an experiment, and Malene encourages clients to operationalize "experimenting" through the use of positive psychology and CBT. The underlying goal is to reduce self-judgment, open the door to self-compassion, and access Peace at any moment.
